FISHERSVILLE – Red-hot Wilson Memorial celebrated its fifth-straight victory Friday night after the Green Hornets waltzed over the crumbling Staunton Storm 42-7 in Shenandoah District football.

Wilson (7-1, 6-0) had no hangover from last week's 17-3 road win over previously unbeaten Alleghany. The Hornets took this one personal after getting shutout 21-0 at home last season by Staunton. Wilson had that margin doubled by halftime, leading 42-0.

Keyvon Jones sparked the first-half blitz with a pair of running scores, passing for another, and on defense, had a 47-yard scoop-n-score. Oh yeah, he also had an interception to set up Wilson's third touchdown in the first quarter.

Wilson's offense scored on all five of its possessions in the first 24 minutes.

“Yes, it was personal for us,” Jones said. “We were taking it personal all week. That kept our focus after coming off the big week last week. I think we are in a good spot right now, but we can always do better.”

The Hornets' stonewall defense has given up only 56 points through eight games, including four shutouts and just 10 points during the winning streak.

The defense lost its bid for a fifth goose egg with 3:48 remaining in the game when Staunton sophomore Gabryel Johnson hit the right corner and was off for an 80-yard score.

Staunton's beleaguered offense has disappeared during a five-game slide taken has taken it out of playoff contention in Region 3C. The Storm have only scored 49 points in those five contests, including 28 in the last four. The offense had only 26 yards of total offense in the first half, and 139 for the game with the bulk coming on Johnson's run.

“Being focused was our main goal coming into the game,” Wilson head coach Ryan Byrd said. “It's natural to have a letdown coming off a huge win, but all the coaches did great jobs keeping the team focused.

“I know Keyvon gets a lot of attention, but the rest of the guys are coming up around him,” Byrd said. “We want to keep going up from here and be at our best for the playoffs.”

Wilson came into the game tied for No. 4 in the Region 3C rankings with Turner Ashby. The top 4 teams earn home games in the first round of the playoffs.

Jones started the scoring barrage with a 2-yard run that capped an 8-play, 66-yard drive with 5:56 left in the first quarter. The senior had a 32-yard run earlier in the series, which also resulted in a 15-yard penalty on the Storm for a late hit out-of-bounds that placed the ball at the 16.

The offense needed just two plays on its next series to find the end zone when Clinton Coffey took a jet sweep down the right sideline 76 yards.

Jones' interception and another 15-yard Storm penalty on the play set the Hornets up at the 20. Jones hit the end zone on the first snap for a 21-0 lead with 8.8 seconds left in the first quarter.

Coffey's second touchdown, this one from 9 yards, pushed the advantage to 28-0 less than two minutes in the second quarter.

Then came Jones' fumble recovery and touchdown for the defense.

“The ball barely touched the ground in front of me after a hard hit, and all I saw was green grass ahead,” he said.

Wilson's final score came with less than a minute left in the half when Jones connected with Nolan Deaver for a 10-yard strike. Maddox Woods converted on all six of his PAT kicks.

While the defense was stifling Staunton (3-5, 1-5) for 48 minutes, Wilson's offense gashed the Storm for 353 yards, including 265 on the ground. Coffey finished with 113 yards on six carries, while Matthew Sisk added 71 on nine rushes. Jones collected 59 on seven runs.

Wilson earned its seventh win in the last eight meetings against the Storm. Staunton still has a sizable 29-13 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1948.

The Hornets look to extend their winning streak Halloween Night at Waynesboro, while the Storm finish their 2025 home schedule against Riverheads. That game will be a milestone for the Staunton/Robert E. Lee football program as it marks the 1,000th in the school's history.
