He worked at BC for 20 years before taking early retirement in 2020. He then worked two years as sports information director at Mary Baldwin University.

While working at Bridgewater, Steve witnessed some big-time games played by the Eagles, including the football team's historic run to the 2001 Division III National Title game where BC lost a close game to national power Mount Union. He also worked and hosted several other NCAA playoff contests at the college.

While working in the sports information business, Steve continued to follow the local high school sports scene writing as a stringer for both the News Leader and the (Waynesboro) News Virginian. He also free-lanced, covering high school events for numerous publications around the state. Steve has won numerous awards for his writing during his time in sports media. Locally, he covered many state playoff and state championship games. He was on hand for many basketball games during Paul Hatcher's legendary run at then Robert E.
