WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Little Giants held off Fort Defiance for the Shenandoah District girls’ cross country title on Wednesday at Ridgeview Park.
The Little Giants won the title with 48 points while Fort scored 64 points, just ahead of Alleghany with 69. Wilson was also in the hunt with 73 points.
The individual race was dominated by Alleghany’s Kiera Lowman. Lowman, who will run next year for the Richmond Spiders, won the race with a time of 19:02.51, more than 90 seconds ahead of Wilson’s Thea Franklin.
Both Waynesboro and Fort put their five scorers inside the Top 18, but the Little Giants with three runners in the Top 10. Lacey Keagy paced Waynesboro with a fourth-place finish, less than a second ahead of her teammate Elliot Hall. Alexis Austin placed 10th overall for the Little Giants with Amelia Kimmell in 12th and Kaitlyn Keagy in 17th place.
Henley Ann Coffman led the Fort contingent with a time of 21:37.25, good for eighth place. Camila Cruz was ninth, followed by Molly O’Brien in 13th, Violet Bast in 16th and Irina Koniukhova.in 18th.
Supporting Franklin’s second-place effort for Wilson was Sydney Troxell in 14th and Annabella Saunders in 15th. Alison Troxell was 20th and Meghan Miller placed 22nd.
Among the other local runners, Riverheads’ Verity Jordan had the best day, placing sixth with a time of 21:36.63.
Staunton’s Finn Tuttle qualified for the Region 3C meet as an individual.
The top nine runners earned first-team all-district honors while runners finishing in spots 10-18 earned second-team recognition.
