FISHERSVILLE – A large crowd of spectators and runners were on hand Tuesday for the Valley Cup cross country relay meet hosted by Wilson Memorial High School and sponsored by Ragged Mountain Running and Walking Shop in Charlottesville.
Each team consisted of four runners with each athlete running a two-mile leg. Waynesboro won the boys' meet while Spotswood claimed the girls' title for the fourth consecutive season.
Grayson Norris, Ross Williamson, Owen Morningstar and Miles Jolin led the Little Giants to the team title. “This is a really fun 2-mile run,” Norris. “It’s an easier race than your normal high school meet.”
Broadway finished second in the boys meet with Spotswood third. Wilson’s A squad placed sixth in the boys’ race out of 33 teams
Alleghany was second in the girls' meet followed by Harrisonburg. The Wilson A team placed fourth overall with Waynesboro sixth, Grace Christian seventh and Fort’s A team eighth in the 19-team field.
The top 25 boys’ and girls’ individual finishers were also recognized. Norris finished second in the boys’ race with Jolin close behind in third. Norris ran his leg in 10:16.6 with Jolin next in line at 10:20.5. East Rockingham’s Caleb Yancey was the top individual runner with a time of 10:01.3.
Other local runners in the Top 25 included. Stuarts Draft’s Easton Nice in 14th, Grace Christian’s Jed Derrick in 17th and Wilson’s Zyler Kite in 23rd.
Alleghany standout Kiera Lowman won the girls individual title with a time of 11:41.2.
The top local finisher was Grace Christian’s Georgia Babish in fourth place overall with a time of 12:20.4.
Other girls in the Top 25 included Wilson’s Thea Franklin in 7th, Fort Defiance’s Camila Cruz in 10th, Waynesboro’s Elliot Hall in 14th, Fort’s Henley Ann Coffman in 17th, Wilson’s Alison Troxell in 20th, Waynesboro’s Alexis Austin in 21st, Wilson’s Meghan Miller in 23rd and Waynesboro’s Lacey Keagy in 25th.
