COVINGTON — Wilson Memorial sets alone on top of the Shenandoah District.
The Green Hornets scored twice in the final six and a half minutes at Casey Field Friday night, handing Alleghany a 17-3 loss, breaking the Cougars’ 21-game regular season win streak.
Wilson is 5-0 in the Shenandoah and 6-1 overall, while Alleghany is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the district.
The hosts, who trailed 3-0 at the halftime break, took almost eight minutes off the third-quarter clock, before Mason Hale tied the game with a 28-yard field goal.
But Wilson had the answer and followed it with a game-clincher.
The Green Hornets went 72 yards in 17 plays in a drive that bridged the third and fourth quarter and chewed up 10 minutes.
Quarterback Keyvon Jones covered the final three yards and Maddox Woods booted the PAT for a 10-3 advantage.
Following a stop by Wilson’s stout defense, Clinton Coffey sealed the win with a 41-yard TD run with 1:50 left.
Woods had the lone points of the first half, booting an 18-yard field goal as time expired, capitalizing on a Carter Breeden interception.
Coffey ran for a game-high 91 yards for the winners, while Jones completed 5-of-9 throws for 82 yards. Jones and Matthew Sisk joined Breeden with interceptions.
Des Jordan completed 11-of-21 throws for 106 yards for Alleghany, who was held to just 86 yards rushing and 192 total yards.
Wilson Memorial is at home next Friday against Staunton, while the Cougars travel to Riverheads.
