BUFFALO GAP – Buffalo Gap won the Region 1B softball title on Thursday as the Bison edged William Campbell.
Gap scored first on Rachel Showalter’s solo homer in the second inning. The visitors tied the score with a run in the third and the teams exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the seventh.
Elissa Caricofe led off the bottom of the seventh and she ended up on third base after her fly ball to center was misplayed for an error. A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases. Cadence Spradlin grounded into a fielder’s choice with pinch-runner Faith Showalter out at the plate. Then, a throwing error on the play allowed Makenzie Woodell to score the winning run.
Rachel Showalter went the distance to pick up the win in the circle. She allowed two hits, struck out 3 and walked just one.
Seven Gap players – Bailey Tribble, Avery Wheeler, Caricofe, McKenzie Woods, Spradlin, Hannah Coffman and Rachel Showalter – each had one base hit.
Gap will host the State Class 1 quarterfinals and will play Lancaster. Lancaster, now 15-9 on the season, lost to Rappahannock-Warsaw 3-2 in the Region 1A title game.
