HARRISONBURG – Wilson Memorial’s Jaxson Devereux finished as the state runner-up Monday at the Class 3 VHSL State Golf Tournament played at Heritage Oaks Course.
Devereux teed off with the first group of the day at 8:30 a.m. and was greeted by windy conditions at Heritage Oaks.
“I was really nervous. I was second-guessing a lot of my shots of the tee due to the win,” Devereux said. “You have to commit to shots and the scores will follow.”
Devereux was 2-under par through six holes before taking a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 seventh hole. He bounced back with a birdie on eight before carding a bogey on No. 9 to make the turn at even par. He added another birdie and two bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 71.
“I was 2-under early and had a lot of momentum and then had a double-bogey on seven. But I bounced back with a birdie on hole 8. I had a lot of momentum and felt great at that point,” Devereux said. “I’m happy with my performance today.”
The ruuner-up finish and a spot on the all-state team concluded a strong season for Devereux that featured Shenandoah District and Region 3C Golfer of the Year accolades.
Staunton junior Addison Brown also got a taste of state tournament play and carded an 81 to tie for 18th overall.
Western Albemarle’s Kennedy MacCleery won the individual title with a 4-under par 66.
McCleery’s round led the Warriors to the team title with a score of 292 , 12-over par. The Warriors won the title by 25 strokes.
