The high school football rankings after Week 8 action didn't see a great deal of movement on the local front.

Wilson Memorial's three-game winning streak has put the Green Hornets back into playoff contention in Region 3C. The Hornets climbed one spot to No. 10 but are a fraction of a point away from reaching the coveted Top 8. Free-falling Alleghany, which Wilson (4-3) crushed Friday 42-10, and Rocktown are tied at No. 8.

The remaining schedule for the Hornets has a trip to another free-falling team in Region 3C, Staunton, on Friday. Then a home game against one-win Waynesboro before closing at Stuarts Draft, which could be a make-or-break game for Wilson.

Staunton (4-3) is falling rapidly in Region 3C, dropping two spots to No. 12. The Storm's offensive production has disappeared over the last two weeks, combining for less than 100 yards of total offense in those games, suffering lopsided losses to Stuarts Draft and Buffalo Gap.

Waynesboro (1-6) stands 14th in Region 3C and has been eliminated from playoff contention. The Little Giants will be looking to disrupt postseason positioning for the teams left on the schedule, starting Friday at home to the high-flying Bison.

Stuarts Draft (6-2) took over the No. 2 spot in Region 2B, which brings a first-round bye for regional play. The Cougars get to enjoy their bye week on Friday before returning for big-time clashes with Buffalo Gap and Wilson.

Fort Defiance (2-5) also moved up one position to No. 5 in Region 2B. The Indians are back on the field Friday after their bye week. Fort, mired in a three-game losing skid, travels to winless Rockbridge County before closing against Alleghany and Staunton.

By far the hottest team in the area is Buffalo Gap (7-1) with its seven-game winning blitz. The Bison, who are averaging 45.5 points over their last four games, has a substantial lead in sitting atop Region 1B. Gap is in prime position to be at home throughout regional play.

Gap has only two games remaining before its bye in the final week. After Friday's trip to Waynesboro, the Bison finish at home against Stuarts Draft, which could be for the outright regular season district championship.

Riverheads (5-2) remained steady at No. 4 in Region 1B after routing Rockbridge County for its third-straight victory. The Gladiators have a huge road game Friday at Class 3 opponent Alleghany in their quest to move higher in the rankings. The final two weeks feature a home game versus Staunton and a road trip to Waynesboro.
