FERRUM, Va. – It didn’t take long for Christian Sorrells, a former standout at Fort Defiance, to make an impact on the Ferrum College football program.

Sorrells started his first game midway through his first year with the Panthers and has remained a mainstay on the offensive line.

“When I got my opportunity, I just ran with it,” Sorrells said in an interview earlier this season. “I worked hard and just tried to get better every practice and every game.”

Sorrells will play in his final home game on Senior Day this Saturday when the Panthers host rival Averett. The two teams played earlier this season with Ferrum taking a 36-10 victory in Danville. A win Saturday would give Ferrum a break-even 5-5 record in the program’s final season in the ODAC. Next season, Ferrum will begin to transition to the Division II level.

The 2024 season offered some challenges. Not only did the Panthers announce a move up to Division II, but the team also started this season with a new coaching staff.

“The transition to a new coaching staff wasn’t that difficult,” said Sorrells in an interview earlier this season. “The new staff came in and right away you could tell they knew what they were doing. They did things the right way. They wanted the seniors to go out with a good season.”

Sorrells entered college as a 250-pound offensive lineman and now tips the scales at 270. The weight room has been his friend. “I love the weight room. It’s part of what you have to do if you are going to continue to get better.”

Sorrells is a health and human performance major at Ferrum and has excelled in the classroom, just as he has on the playing field.

He has been a member of the Dean’s list multiple times and has been an ODAC All-Academic selection each year. Sorrells has also been named to the College Sports Communicators All-District Academic team in each of his first three seasons at Ferrum.

“My parents always stressed the importance of academics. School always comes first,” Sorrells said.

After his playing days are over, Sorrells would like to stay involved in the game he loves.

“I want to be a strength and conditioning coach. I’d like to stay around football,” he said.
