Roberts Wins Title At Zone Qualifier, PLUS Big Red Results

HARRISONBURG – Several local wrestlers posted top five finishes Saturday at the VHSL Zone 3 Girls Qualifier hosted by Rocktown High School.

Riverheads’ Mariah Roberts won the title at 114 with three convincing victories. Roberts defeated Elana Vargas of Harrisonburg in the quarterfinals and Destiny Water of Amelia County in the semis – both by technical fall. Roberts won the championship by fall over Stonewall Jackson’s Hayden Clem.

Buffalo Gap’s Brynan Hildebrand also wrestled at 114 and finished third. Hildebrand won her first match by fall over Laila Reid of Orange, but lost by fall to Stonewall Jackson’s Clem in the semis. She then pinned Vargas of Harrisonburg in the consolation semis before defeating Reid for the second time with a pin in just 40 seconds.

At 185, Fort Defiance’s Faith Morrow and Staunton’s Saige McCurdy both fared well by making it to the third-place match.

Morrow and McCurdy faced each other in the quarters with Morrow winning by pin. Morrow lost in the semis to Albemarle’s Teresa Fugal but bounced back to defeat Jefferson Forest’s Luna Stump by fall. Morrow and McCurdy faced again in the third-place match with McCurdy winning again by fall.

After losing to Morrow in the quarterfinals, McCurdy won two matches, the first by technical fall and the second by pin to earn another shot at Morrow in the third-place match.

Stuarts Draft’s Saryah Manduajano placed fifth at 126. After winning her first-round match, Manduajano lost by fall in the second round. She then won four straight matches in the consolations before falling the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Manduajano pinned Liberty Bealeton’s Yaritza Rodriguez in just 23 seconds.

– Riverheads finished fourth yesterday in its 8th Annual Big Red Wrestling Tournament. A field of 14 teams participated in the event.

Riverheads ‘Mason Wood won the title at 106, pinning Central-Wise’s Evan Brinkley in the title match.

Gladiators’ teammate Bryson Cash won the title at 138, defeating Lord Botetourt’s Camden Saunders by technical fall.

Riverheads also had a pair of third-place efforts. At 144, Preston McCauley won a 9-2 decision over Lord Botetourt’s Morgan Parr to take third place. At 165, Jacob Johnson won by fall over Albrion Mendez of Massaponax in the third-pace match.

Also placing for the Gladiators were Josh Brown in fourth place at 113, Joseph Rowe fifth at 150, Cole Coffman fourth at 175 and Trey Payseur fifth at 190.

Buffalo Gap’s Aiden Acord placed second at 215, dropping a 5-1 decision to Central-Wise wrestler Luke Josey in the title match.

Gap’s Devyn Simmons finished fourth at 132, dropping the third-place match to Matthew Mayr of Clarke County.
