Waynesboro native Reggie Harris has been hired as pitching coach for the Down East Bird Dogs. The Bird Dogs will play their inaugural season in 2025 as a member of the Frontier League. The Frontier League is an MLB Partner League.
Harris is a former professional baseball pitcher, who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1990 to 1999. He was drafted 26th overall in the first round of the 1987 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox organization. Harris played in the Majors with five different teams – the Oakland Athletics, the Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Throughout his six-season career, Harris made 86 mound appearances.
Harris began his coaching career with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in 2012. Harris has served as pitching coach for the Sussex County Miners of the Frontier League, the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League, the Indy League Chicago Dogs and the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League. He recently served as bench coach for the Lake Country DockHounds in the American Association League.
In 2022 Harris guided the Gastonia pitching staff that led the Atlantic League in lowest ERA, lowest WHIP and most shutouts.
Harris was a two-sport standout at Waynesboro High School. In addition to his exploits on the baseball diamond, Harris was a standout on the basketball court, earning a scholarship to Virginia Tech but instead opted to sign a professional baseball contract with the Red Sox organization. Harris scored more than 1,600 points during his hoops career with the Little Giants.
