Gladiators Win District Wrestling title; Riverheads' Swats, Fort's Yoder take top awards

GREENVILLE – The Riverheads Gladiators claimed the Shenandoah District wrestling title Wednesday evening.

The Gladiators scored 198.5 points to take first place, followed by Staunton with 176.5. Fort Defiance was next with 146 points, followed by Waynesboro with 126.5, Wilson with 74, Stuarts Draft with 61.5 and Buffalo Gap with 57.5 points.

Riverheads head coach Scott Swats was named the district Coach of the Year and Fort’s Landon Yoder was the Wrestler of the Year. Yoder won two matches at 165 to stay unbeaten on the season with a 40-0 record.

Riverheads’ Bryson Cash improved to 35-1 at 128 and Mason Wood at 106 improved to 32-2 on the season. For Staunton Alex Arroyo improved to 21-1 at 113. Brodie Miller is now 28-1 at 150 and Kelston Byers is 30-1 at 285.

Staunton won five weight classes at the district meet, followed by Riverheads and Fort Defiance with three wins each.
