Fort, Gladiators Claim Key District Wins; Little Giants Pick up first victory

Fort Defiance 8, Buffalo Gap 1
FORT DEFIANCE
– Fort Defiance remained undefeated in district play with an 8-1 victory Friday over the Buffalo Gap Bison.

The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the first and led the entire game.

Caroline Hanger and Sherri Marshall each had three hits to lead the Fort offense. Avery Shuler and Olivia Newman each added two base hits.

Sara Turner went the distance in the circle for the winners, allowing seven hits and just one unearned run. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Riverheads 4, Wilson 3
FISHERSVILLE
– Wilson’s seventh-inning rally came up just short Friday as Riverheads held on for a 4-3 victory over the Hornets.

Riverheads took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Happy Huffer had the key hit of the inning with a two-run single. 

Wilson scored in the fifth to make it 3-1, but the Gladiators added what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh. Whitney Abshire doubled to lead off the seventh for Riverheads, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Addison Shiflett to lead 4-1.

Gabby Shaver walked to lead off the seventh for Wilson and Caylee Stevens singled with one out. Shaver scored on a sac fly by Katelyn Harman, pulling Wilson to within 4-2. Natalee Chandler’s two-out double scored Stevens to make it a one-run game but Riverheads’ pitcher Cheyenne Bottenfield recorded the final out with a strikeout the preserve the 4-3 victory. 

Stevens was 3-for-4 to lead the Wilson offense. Harman, Chandler and Emma Lane each added two hits. 

Sadie Poole, Hattie Croft and Huffer each collected two hits for the Gladiators.

Waynesboro 29, Charlottesville 15
CHARLOTTESVILLE
– Waynesboro picked up its first softball victory of the season, outscoring Charlottesville 29-15 on Friday.

Leadoff hitter Makaya Bryant was 3-for-4 and scored five runs for Waynesboro. Makayla Johnson was 4-for-6 with seven RBIs. Kyleigh Staton, Katherine Madrid, Yocelyn Saenz and Kelly Griffith each drove in three runs.
