Cubbage Claims Two Titles; McLaughlin, Snyder Claim Pole Vault Titles

T&F Meet

Fort Defiance junior Taylor Cubbage claimed two individual state titles Saturday at the Class 2 State T&F Championship Meet hosted at JMU’s Sentara Park. 

Cubbage won the girls high jump, soaring over the bar at 5 feet, 5 inches. She then ran away from the field in the 400 meters, winning with a time of 58.44 seconds, more than one second clear of the second-place finisher.

Fort Defiance’s Jeffrey McLaughlin won the state title in the pole vault on Saturday, clearing 14 feet, 1 inch. Local vaulters dominated the event with Jackson Fitzgerald of Riverheads second (11-0), Fort’s Carson Wright third (11-0), Riverheads’ Storm Parker tied for fourth (10-6), Riverheads’ Tristan Tallon sixth (10-6). Draft’s Zach Floyd seventh (10-0) and Riverheads’ Haze Williams in eighth (9-6).

Fort’s Parker Blosser finished second in the 3200 with a time of 9:46.23.

Stuarts Draft’s Derrick Moore placed fifth in the 110 hurdles finals with 15.16 time. Cougars’ teammate Landon Graber placed seventh in the triple jump at 42 feet, 4.75 inches. Moore was second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.22 and Graber was seventh in the event, finishing in 41.60 seconds.

Draft’s Tyler Obaugh placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 51.22 seconds.

Two local athletes placed in the girls’ 100 hurdles. Riverheads’ Alexis Sacra finished third with a time of 17.15 while Draft’s Anna Callo placed sixth with a time of 17.54.

Draft’s Takota Moore finished fourth in the shot put with a best throw of 33 feet, 7.25 inches.

Fort’s Camila Cruz placed fifth in the 1600 meters, running 5:28.19.

Riverheads’ Verity Jordan crossed the line in sixth place in the 800 with a time of 2:27.49.

Fort’s 4x400 girls’ relay placed second with a time of 4:14.80. Running for the Indians were Cubbage, Cruz, Lia Herr and Riley Birt.

Both of Draft’s 4x100 relay placed. The girls finished sixth with a time of 51.71. Running for the Cougars were Ava Flippin, Karlee Layne, Camila Roadcap and Blanca Quintero. The boys relay placed fifth with a time of 43.48. Running for Draft were Katrell Anthony, Landon Graber, Tyler Obaugh and Da’shea Smith.

Fort Defiance finished sixth in the girls’ meet with 33 points. Draft’s boys placed sixth with 36 points and Fort cracked the Top 10 in ninth place with 25 points.

Class 3 T&F Meet

Waynesboro’s Trent Snyder cleared the bar at 14 feet, 6 inches on Saturday to win the pole vault at the Class 3 State T&F Championship Meet held at Liberty University.

Wilson’s Desi Mensah placed in both sprints Saturday at the Class 3 State T&F Championship Meet. Mensah took fourth in the 100 with a 12.46 time and fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.29.

Wilson’s Ava Ferraro placed eight in the long jump with a best effort of 16-6.

Waynesboro freshman Macy Rowe placed sixth in the 3200 with a time of 11:40.43.

In the boys’ competition, Waynesboro distance runners scored in two events. Dylan Colander placed fifth in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:22.87. Grayson Norris finished eighth in the 3200 with a time of 9:43.56.

Wilson’s Joseph Pincock placed eight in the discus with a throw of 136 feet.

Class 1 T&F Meet

Buffalo Gap’s 4x400 boys’ relay team placed third with a time of 3:34.14. Running for the Bison were Alexander Duquette, Elias Duquette, Jude Louk and Isaac Goff.
