College Notebook: Fomby Earns State Honor Plus Much More

CNU senior Latrell Fomby (Stuarts Draft) has been named the VaSID College Division All-State Indoor T&F Field Event Athlete of the Year. Fomby rewrote the record books throughout the winter season with the Captains. In the shot put, His best throw in the shot put – 16.12 meters, broke the previous program record by more than 10 inches. In the weight throw, he set a new program mark with a throw of 18.07 meters. He won the conference title in the weight throw with a best effort of 16.89 meters.
CNU senior Kate Alger (Buffalo Gap) was named to the Coast-2-Coast all-conference first team, the third straight year she has received first-team all-conference honors. Alger is 17-2 this season with a 1.38 ERA. She has struck out 114 batters and walked just 20 in 112 innings pitched. Alger was the winning pitcher in the conference title game, an eight-inning, 9-5 victory over No. 8 ranked Salisbury. She pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits. No. 3 ranked CNU, now 35-4, will appear in the NCAA national tournament for the 18th consecutive season.
Noah and Micah Canterbury (Buffalo Gap) will be playing in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Falcons advanced to the MEC Championship Game where they lost to Point Park, 7-0. Fairmont, however, earned the MEC’s automatic bid to the D-II tournament. Fairmont will play in a three-team, double-elimination tournament featuring host West Chester and East Stroudsburg. Fairmont and East Stroudsburg will open play on Thursday at 11 a.m. Noah Canterbury had two big games in the conference tourney, going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in a 12-2 win over Concord and 2-for-5 with two RBIs in a 8-0 win over Frostburg State.
Eastern Mennonite junior Aidan Miller (Riverheads) was named to the All-ODAC Third Team at shortstop. Miller hit .336 with 51 hits, six triples, five homers and 29 RBIs.
Hadley May (Stuarts Draft) was named Mary Baldwin’s 2025 Female Athlete of the Year, She is the first MBU student-athlete to earn first-team all-conference in the voting of coaches since the University joined the USA South more than 15 years ago. She set numerous individual records this year and during her career, including the team records for home runs in a season.
Bridgewater senior Mike Smith (Waynesboro) threw a personal best in the discus at the Mount Olive Final Qualifier with a throw of 158 feet, one inch. The throw moves Smith to No. 2 all-time in the event at Bridgewater. Smith was also named to the VaSID College Division All-State Indoor T&F First Team in the throws.
Roanoke freshman Amari Carter (Waynesboro) was named to the VaSID College Division All-State Indoor T&F First Team in the sprints.
