Callo, Graber Win State Titles; Mensah Sets Wilson Record in 100

Class 2 State T&F
Weather suspended part of Friday’s schedule at the Class 2 State T&F Championship Meet, but not before Stuarts Draft’s Anna Callo and Landon Graber won individual state titles.
Callo led an impressive showing by local pole vaulters winning the title by clearing 10-6. Riverheads swept the next two spots with Alexis Sacra taking second plate at 9-0 and Olivia Keller claiming third at 8-6. Draft’s Blanca Quintero cleared 6-6 to earn sixth-place points.
Graber dominated the shot put competition with a winning throw of 54 feet, 8 inches.
Fort Defiance’s 4x800 girls relay finished eighth with a time of 11:02.21. Running for the Indians were Violet Bast, Kelsey Lambert, Molly O’Brien and Riley Birt.
Riverheads turned in a strong effort in the boys 4x800 relay, finishing fourth with a time of 8:34.37. Running for the Gladiators were Colton Stewart, Ethan Fitzgerald, Cy Jarvis and Guillermo Basurto-Cacho.
In Friday’s preliminaries, Callo and Sacra both qualified for Saturday’s 100 hurdles final. Callo ran 17.26 and Sacra posted a time of 17:40.
Draft’s Derrick Moore qualified for the final in the boys 110 hurdles, posting a time of 15.32.
Class 3 State T&F
Wilson’s Desi Mensah qualified for Saturday’s finals in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Mensah set a new Hornets’ record in the 100 with a time of 12.02 seconds. Mensah had the third-fastest qualifying time and was one of three runners who eclipsed the state meet record in the event. Mensah also qualified third in the 200 with a time of 24.96.
The Waynesboro girls scored in two events during Friday competition. Jordan Smith placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 113-8. Skylar Sloat cleared 10-6 in the pole vault to finish in fourth place.
